Civil liberties are something we often take for granted. Speech, expression, the right to gather publicly. We live in a country where the constitution guarantees everyone those and many other basic rights. But what if all that changed? There are multitudes around the globe living today under oppressive rule where some or all of those rights can be taken away on a whim, if they ever existed at all. In a post-9/11 world, fear has many times proved strong enough to sway governments, even our own, into acts that many consider oppressive.

Richard Jackson, in a book published by Benjamin Franklin, wrote, “Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” What would you do if your basic civil liberties were revoked in the name of public safety? How would you respond to a government of oppression? How important are your freedoms? Would you risk imprisonment or even death to fight for all of our freedom? Would you break Curfew?

They’re my favorite horror genre. Dawn of the Dead. Walking Dead. Even Resident Evil (They’re not really zombies in the classic sense. I mean, that one dude in the last film with the giant axe thing? I know he was from the game, but seriously???) And I’ve really enjoyed a lot of zombie fiction. World War Z is particularly engaging as a fleshed-out (pardon the pun) future recounting of how the zombie outbreak happened. Along that same vein is Mira Grant’s Feed, first book in the Newsflesh trilogy.

Feed tells the story of a group of bloggers following the campaign trail of a presidential hopeful 25 years after “the Rising,” otherwise known as that time when all the dead people started eating us. Zombies are now a part of daily life, a constant threat just waiting to attack. People still live and work much as they always have, although they now reside in guarded “protected neighborhoods,” their homes and offices barricaded against the undead. Just going outside requires a clean blood test to get back in, lest you risk infecting (eating) everyone else inside when you turn. And as the road to the White House goes on; murder, mystery, and intrigue follow like a pack of ravenous zombies, slowly shuffling its way toward the living, ready to gnash your flesh between its cold, dead teeth.

Feed was released in May of 2010, followed a year later by this month’s Deadline. There is one more title in the trilogy, scheduled for release in 2012. I thoroughly recommend Feed and can’t wait to sink my teeth into Deadline. Braaaaiiiiiiinnzzzzzzz.

The Perrys have bought their first home. It’s a beautiful 3-bedroom, 2-bath home on an acre lot in an amazing neighborhood near many of our friends. We closed on Friday and are beginning to move today. There are so many wonderful features about our new house; things like a fully fenced in back yard with a playset for the kids, whirlpool tub for Mommy, and separate 2-car garage/shop for Daddy. But truthfully, the single greatest feature of our new home is that it’s ours. It is our home. It’s not a nice place we rent from someone else, it’s ours. And forever and ever it always will be. Honey, we’re home!
